Working in the marine industry for as many years that I have, going to boat shows has become something completely different than what I remember from the past. Growing up on Miami Beach, my brother and I looked forward to each February. It was our time to terrorize all the boat salesmen. Climbing through every boat and collecting brochures in our bags till they were so heavy we could barely carry them. Just a note, those were the days that the venue was only at the convention center and there were no roped off displays and parking was free. I have been saying to myself for years, I would love to go to a boat show and just be able to stroll around and just enjoy myself, minus terrorizing all the salesmen of course. Well this past February I got that chance. Now living on the west coast, my cousin Sean and I decided to take our better halves to the Miami International Boat Show. The plan was set to drive over Sunday for the day. Being in the industry, I knew this year’s show would not be one of the better ones due to our still struggling economy but I still wanted to go. Plus the only reason I was able to go was that the economy was slow. In the past we have been so busy, I have not been able to take time off. Soon as we purchased our tickets, (yes no comps) I was bombarded with so many memories of my dad, brother and I year after year going to the show. Sean had an agenda, he wanted to look at a few specific boats, and me I was just happy not to be working. After being there a while we could tell the ladies were quickly getting bored. So the girls were off. We knew where they were heading. It was off to the beer stand. Kind of weird right, you would figure it would be the two boys off to the beer stand. An hour or so passed and we were enjoying ourselves doing the guy thing and Sean says to me “I wonder what they are up to?” I said “I bet they are upstairs where all the vendors are and I bet you they have been shopping!” The bet was set. Sure enough a little time later we run into them bags in hand. Bet won! Sean and I asked each other “what they could have possibly bought at a boat show, maybe something for us possibly. Nope. My lady pulls out a little tank top with the saying “his best catch” on it. I thought about it for a second, ok, that was a really nice redfish and that was a really awesome snook but yeah she was probably right again. We all had a good laugh and at that point I knew again how fun it was to be a regular person at a boat show. If you went to the Miami boat show and went upstairs it would be hard to miss the Reel Sassy booth. It was the one filled with all the pretty ladies and where my lady got here new addition to her wardrobe. (Not that she needed anymore clothes). Reel Sassy has been in business two years and was created from a random thought between two South Florida natives, Kimberlee Ewing and Kristy Levin. Both ladies are married to sportsfishing boat captains and have traveled the tournament circuit from Florida to the Caribbean and Mexico. During these events and others such as boat shows and conservation forums the ladies quickly realized in this male dominated sport that there were little to no products for women. Reel Sassy likes to say “Give your men back their “boat shirts” and come aboard Reel Sassy for cute, sassy ladies sportfishing clothing”. Products include slogan tank top such as “His Best Catch” and “Reel Girls Fish”, ribbed tank tops featuring a really cool Marlin tattoo print, v-neck burnouts, dresses, SPF 30 performance shirts, long sleeve shirts, hoodies, cowboy hats, visors and flip flops. Ladies you can even find your very own custom made Crowder inshore or offshore fishing rod in pink of course at Reel Sassy. Their products have been featured in Marlin Magazine, Sportsfishing Magazine, Gaff Magazine and in the latest Melton International Tackle Catalog as the newest ladies apparel line. One of our goals here at Sunshine State Angler is to get all family members involved in our lifestyle. For 2010, Reel Sassy will be introducing products for the little anglers with the introduction of their line “Lil’ Bit Sassy” which is sure to be as successful as Reel Sassy. Look for their junior angler merchandise in our “Kids Cast” section in the future. We encourage you to check out all their products at http://www.reelsassy.com or email them at info@reelsassy.com and show everyone your love for fishing!
